FARMERSVILLE — Farmersville's season kicked off on a disappointing note Friday night, falling 27-14 to visiting Strathmore.

Early on, both defenses played well.

Strathmore (1-0) was able to move the ball deep into Farmersville (0-1) territory but an interception by the Aztecs' Rogelio Ramirez halted the Spartan drive. The Spartans again appeared to be knocking on the door but Ramon Martinez recovered a fumble for the Aztecs at their own 20, denying Strathmore once again.

But with just less than three minutes left in the half, Strathmore's Jesse Soria punched the ball in from the inside the one on fourth and goal. Soria would finish the game with 116 yards on 25 carries.

A costly turnover — one of five committed by the Aztecs during the game — resulted in another Spartan touch down before the half.

At the 1 minute, 38 second mark, Serafin Moreno stepped in front of a pass intended for Farmersville's Raymon Parras and returned the ball from 35 yards out to make the score 14-0.

The Aztecs did show a little life at the end of the half, aided by two Spartan penalties, but failed to score when Zach Purdin intercepted a Nolan Rios pass in the end zone.

On the opening drive of the second half, Farmersville was able to move down the field like a knife through butter.

Running back Nick Salazar got the Aztecs on the board, scampering into the end zone virtually untouched to make the score 14-6. But Strathmore responded immediately on the next drive, adding another touchdown.
